After receiving the email to pre screen Den of Thieves I was like eh… especially after reading the synopsis: A gritty Los Angeles crime saga which follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.
What created an interest in this film for me was O’shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube’s son, yea the one that played him in Straight Outta Compton). I was curious to see what he would do in a film outside of playing someone he’s so familiar with. I must admit he performed WONDERFULLY! Reminiscent of his father he’s done a great job at mastering the art of acting.
Den of Thieves is surprisingly spirited! Yes, it’s totally your cliche bank robbers vs cops movie however the great detail into each characters life establishes a connection to the screen during the 2 hour showing.
Nick Flanagan (Gerard Butler) is the bad ass that heads LA’s Sheriff’s Dept. His riveting nature always leads him to catching his suspects but this group of bank robbers Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber), Bosco (Evan Jones) Donnie (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) and Levi Enson (50 Cent) keeps him on his toes. After finishing a very successful heist Merrimen heads the team to take on the Federal Reserve Bank of Los Angeles. Donnie finds himself between the two groups fighting for survival. Does the meticulous Merriman lead the crew on a successful heist or will they each meet their fate?
You’ll have to check it out in theaters this weekend, January 19th! Be prepared for witty insults, major gun power, and a surprising plot twist!!
