Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank in "The Homesman" in select theaters

When I got an email regarding a film starring Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank I was instantly drawn in. I mean, two of the most noted actors in Hollywood together in a film equals greatness but I was pretty disappointed.
The Homesman is an award winning novel written by Glendon Swarthout that is currently brought unto the big screen and produced by Hollywood heavy hitter Tommy Lee Jones. It’s a tale of a very strong, independent and dedicated woman named Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) who embarks on a cross country journey on a mission to take 3 ill minded women (affected by pioneer life) to a minister (John Lithgow) and his wife (Meryl Streep) who has offered to take them in. Along the way she comes across George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones) a drifter left for dead and they embark on the journey together. The film clearly shows the animosity between the two, they don’t necessarily like each other but realize they need each other.
What I like about the film is that Jones brings out his character to be a “hard ass”, he is not one to take no for an answer, he talks slick but his wisdom is what they need for survival. Watching Swank you notice just how much of a great actress she is. The woman is PHENOMINAL! She brings the struggles a woman in the 1800s faces across the screen such as no husband or kids and so on. The film is very slow with little to no excitement along the way. The twist to Cuddy was surprising and the celebration at the end left me feeling (meh) like more should have taken place. I rate this film a 6 out of 10, it would be much lower if the acting were subpar. The film opens today at the following theaters in the metroplex: Legacy 24; Angelika Film Center & Cafe- Plano and Magnolia Theatre- Dallas.
