EPIX Original Documentary "Forgotten Four: The Integration of Pro Football" is a must see!

The Forgotten Four is a remarkable story about four courageous African American men Kenny Washington (Los Angeles Ram), Woody Strode (Los Angeles Ram), Marion Motley (Cleveland Browns) and Bill Willis (Cleveland Browns) who were inducted into the NFL during a time of segregation in 1946 breaking the color barrier and creating a vital piece of history.

EPIX and the Dallas Cowboys held a private advance screening of the documentary from Emmy award winning producer Ross Greenburg at the impeccable AT&T Stadium. In my opinion, this is a documentary to watch, listen and learn from. Taking place one year before Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey were credited with integrating Major League Baseball their stories are told by family members, football legends and historians.

Insight is given to us about the challenges faced by the “four” from their teammates, coaches and spectators throughout their years in the NFL and their daily struggles during that era. I enjoyed detailed and personal stories about these brave men told by their kids and grandkids.

After watching the film I could only imagine how gutsy one would have to be to deal with all the hatred from individuals around you. It made me realize, they were not just playing the game for themselves but for generations of African American athletes.

A few former NFLers were also in attendance to take part in this wonderful event at AT&T Stadium. Timmy Newsome, former Dallas Cowboys fullback said he was “very surprised, I did not know that the color barrier had been broken before Jackie Robinson.” Running back Preston Pearson (who finished his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys) felt that “Brown (coach of the Cleveland Browns) was the perfect example of a team coming together as family. Glen Titensor, former Dallas Cowboys lineman expressed that “it is important to see history played out. It was a great documentary.” All three men agreed that every child should listen to this documentary especially if they are athletes.
